The history of Lakeland

It was during the 1960s that the 3 Rayner brothers (Sam, Martin and Julian), in need of pocket money, started helping their father, Alan, count plastic polythene bags into packs of 100. Alan was in the business of buying chickens from farms, plucking and preparing them before packing them into plastic bags for selling at Kendal market. This led to the other smallholders asking to buy Alan’s bags from him – a need that became so great Alan founded Lakeland Plastics right in his garage in 1964.

In 1974, Alan retired and the 3 boys took over. By then, Lakeland was leading the home-freezing trend. But people who freeze food also tend to cook it. Thus, Lakeland produced their ‘Everything for Home Cooking’ catalogue – their first step in the direction of the kitchenware business.

The 1980s’ full-colour catalogues boosted Lakeland’s reputation even more, leading to the brand becoming known as one of the UK’s top kitchen- and home products suppliers. Although the company name changed to ‘Lakeland Plastics’ in the 1990s due to diversity issues, it adopted its new (and current) name in 2006.

Lakeland’s range of products has gained a significant boost thanks to the company’s 60+ years’ of success. And it certainly shows in the brand’s growing series of outlets, as there are currently 68 Lakeland stores scattered across the UK (including the company’s flagship store located right next to its head office in Windermere).
