IKEA, all the offers at your fingertips

For nearly 80 years, Swedish-brand IKEA, which is committed to creating a better everyday life via its product range, has remained one of the UK’s most successful home furniture chains.

About IKEA

You might not need an introduction to IKEA Furniture, but what about IKEA Food (which accounts for about 5% of sales)? Since 1958, IKEA has been committed to including a café in every store, with primarily Swedish food on the menu. But depending on the store’s location, a range of local dishes are also incorporated, like poutine in Canada, gelato in Italy, etc.

The history of IKEA

Ingvar Kamprad was only 16 years old when his father gave him some money for doing well in school. This was in 1943 in Älmhult, Sweden and Ingvar decided to start a company. For the name, he settled on IKEA: an abbreviation of Ingvar Kamprad from Elmtaryd (the family farm) and Agunnaryd (the local parish). Five years later, furniture is introduced into the IKEA mail order catalogue, signifying the brand’s success.

However, feeling threatened by fresh competition, many Swedish furniture retailers boycotted the IKEA brand in 1950. No problem, for that same year the first IKEA catalogue is introduced, boosting the company’s reputation and customer base. Moving forward, the brand launched its first showroom in 1953 (allowing shoppers to see and experience the products’ quality before shopping). 10 years later the first IKEA store opened outside Sweden (in Norway), and in 1987 the company finally opened its first UK store in Warrington.

Today, IKEA remains a global brand that merges home/office furniture with affordability, high-quality design, and comfort – a clear indication that the brand is still committed to its vision: to create a better everyday life for the many people.
