The history of Primark

Proudly Irish by heritage, the first Primark store opened back in 1969, in Dublin, under the name Penneys. After tasting retail success, the brand expanded into Northern Ireland two years later by opening a large store in Belfast City Centre. The first Penneys brand outside of Ireland was opened in Derby, England, in 1973. But since the company was forbidden from using the name “Penneys” in the rest of Europe (as it was registered by J. C. Penney), the company invented the name “Primark” to use outside of Ireland.

Continuing with business, the Primark brand proceeded successfully and in May 2006, opened the first Primark store in mainland Europe – in Madrid, Spain. This was quickly followed by a slew of additional stores scattered across Europe, including The Netherlands and France. Finally, in September 2015, the first Primark branch opened in Boston, America.

Currently, the biggest Primark store (which offers a spacious 14,800 m² of fashion potential spread across five floors) is located in Birmingham, UK.
