The history of Matalan

Matalan was founded back in 1985 by John Hargreaves, a successful market trader in the UK. But while vacationing in the US in the early 1980s he discovered the retail concept of club warehouses that were located outside of towns and offered fantastic discounts. Inspired to try it in the UK, Hargreaves opened Matalan Discount Club in Preston, Lancashire to a positive response from the public – so positive, in fact, that 49 more Matalan stores had popped up across the country a mere decade later.

In addition to introducing a new business concept to UK shoppers, Matalan is also credited with offering consumers a batter variety of products (whether it be summer dresses or home décor) at lower, more reasonable prices.

The Matalan brand continued to evolve, moving its headquarters to Skelmersdale in 1997 and launching its credit / reward card in October 2000 for both in-store and online shopping.

Today, the Matalan brand is appreciated in hundreds of UK stores, various international franchise shops within Europe and the Middle East, as well as a flourishing online sales and -shopping channel.
