The main aim of the Gap brand, which evolved into one of the biggest fashion companies in the world, is to dress the whole family (from baby to grandparents) happy and comfortably.

About Gap: The meaning behind the name

The original goal of the first Gap was pretty straightforward and humble: husband and wife pair Doris (38) and Don (41) Fisher simply wanted quality denim jeans that fit properly. So intense was their commitment that they even named their store after it – Gap, with its meaning referring to the “generation gap” between what retail stores were offering at that time and what younger consumers actually desired from clothing stores.

The history of Gap

And so, the Fishers opened the first Gap store in 1969 in San Francisco, California, with men’s Levi’s jeans and record tapes as the only items for sale. But the brand’s reputation was soon boosted, because by 1972 the first Gap store had evolved into 25 branches. Cut to 5 years later, when the Gap stores launched two new chain stores: Logo and Brands.

In 1986, the first Gap Kids opened in San Mateo. And the very next year, the Gap brand crossed the pond and opened several UK stores in London. As time and technology progressed, so did the Gap brand, debuting its baby Gap products in 1990 and kick-starting its online shopping a few years later.

In 2010, Gap opened in China and launched Gap.cn for more online retail therapy. And in 2021, Gap Home launched exclusively on Walmart.com with 200 homeware pieces ranging from beds and baths to tables and pillows.

In September 2021, Gap closed all its UK and Ireland stores and reached a deal with Next: to sell all its clothes (including baby products and accessories for kids) across Next’s online platform and to host Gap-branded “shop in shops” at selected retail stores, in addition to also offering click-and-collect options for customer convenience.
