The history of Monsoon

Ibiza, 1970. Peter Simon, a market-stall trader, is on a hippy commune and he has one vision: to share the vibrant, colourful and hand-crafted artisan clothing designs from foreign lands with the lively market scenes of London. From there, Simon travels through Afghanistan and India to pursue his passion for striking, bohemian-inspired dresses and clothing accessories that show off hand-printed, hand-woven designs – all of which he promptly takes back with him to sell at a stall in Portobello Road, London.

Cut to 1973, when Simon opens his first shop (Monsoon) in London. Due to overwhelming enthusiasm and a growing client base, Simon is able to open his first Accesorize shop in 1984, right next to the Monsoon in Covent Garden.

From the start, Monsoon teamed up with craftspeople in villages and small communities for sustainable independence. And in 1994, this led to the founding of The Monsoon Accessorize Trust to assist disadvantaged women and children across Asia.

But that still isn’t the end of the story, for Monsoon boosted its popularity prominently by launching its first clothing range for kids in 1995. This was followed by Monsoon Home in 1999 and, finally, the launch of online shopping at monsoon.co.uk and accesorize.com in 2000.
