The history of Dorothy Perkins

Dorothy Perkins was founded in 1909 as Ladies Hosiery and Underwear Limited. Met with success, the company evolved into 12 shops and changed its name to Dorothy Perkins in 1919. And although the brand’s clothing was hugely popular, especially during the ‘roaring 20s’, it was during the 1930s (with the arrival of Hollywood) that the brand’s dresses and shoes became more elegant and streamlined.

With the arrival of the 1950s, Dorothy Perkins started selling clothes for teenagers – think jeans with prints, dresses with polka dots, and more. During the next decade, Dorothy Perkins opened its 250th store while also introducing cash registers in all shops.

In 1979, Dorothy Perkins was bought by the Burton Group (later known as Arcadia). The next decade introduced the brand’s ‘secrets’ lingerie and nightwear range while also launching the Dorothy Perkins Account card.

Throughout the following decades, the brand would launch numerous ranges in selected stores (including Maternity, Petite, Tall, etc.). But it was the introduction of its online shop, allowing customers to shop for their choices of clothing and accessories 24/7, that prominently boosted the brand even more.

In February 2021, Dorothy Perkins was purchased by Boohoo.com, which still operates the brand’s online shop today to ensure shoppers (whether from the UK or overseas) still get to enjoy high-quality clothing, exclusive sale specials, and more.
