Michael Caborn-Waterfield opened the first Ann Summers shop in 1970, London (and rumour has it he named the brand after his secretary and mistress). But one year later, brothers Ralph and David Gold purchased Ann Summers and transformed the business from a standard sex shop into a high-street brand and lingerie boutique.

By 1980, Ann Summers had evolved into 6 stores. But it was only when Jacqueline Gold joined her father’s business in 1981 that things changed radically. After attending a regular Tupperware party, Jacqueline (who became CEO in 1993) transformed the idea into a naughtier version for Ann Summers clientele, which proved to be a huge success.

The first Ann Summers catalogue arrived in 1982, offering shoppers a convenient look at the brands comfy / sexy dressing gowns and more. But Ann Summers’ reputation got a tremendous boost in 1991 with the launch of their Rampant Rabbit, one of the company’s most popular vibrators.
