Headquartered in the UK, Next is a multinational retailer specialising in clothing, footwear, beauty- and home products. The company’s day-to-day operations are fuelled by two balancing activities: retail stores and online catalogue sales.
About Next
Although there are various Next stores scattered across numerous countries, the company remains a UK-based brand. This ties in nicely with its perspective: “...to be the natural choice retailer in the UK for fashion aware men & women who expect style, distinction & quality from their clothing”.
Part of Next’s appeal is its various operating channels, which includes Next Online (aimed at selling clothing and homeware in the UK and Eire via online catalogues, orders and sales), Next Retail (a chain of Next stores operating in the UK and Eire), and more.
The history of Next
Joseph Hepworth started Next as a tailor business in Leeds back in1864 as Joseph Hepworth & Son. But Hepworth quickly saw potential in his business, leading to him rapidly expanding the company and opening 100 outlets in 20 years.
During the next century, in 1981, the company bought a chain of Kendalls rainwear shops to start a collection of stores specialising in women’s wear. With this new chain a new company format was born, and by 1984 around 50 Hepworth stores were converted into the new Next format (which included menswear). The next year, Next’s first home interiors range was introduced to the public and a year later, the company officially adopted its new Next name.
Children’s wear became part of Next’s catalogues in 1987 and by 1994 the brand was operating in no fewer than 300 stores internationally.
In 1999 Next launched its website, and online shopping and ordering, ushering the trendy brand into a new era.
