The history of Skechers

It was 1992 in the US. L.A. Gear had a lock on the womens athletic market, while Nike was in control of the market for mens wear. But Robert Greenberg couldn’t find any industry big leagues who dominated the market for both mens and womens street shoes – so he created one and called it Skechers. And the next year, the brand released its first ‘big hit’: the Chrome Dome.

Met with overwhelming enthusiasm, Skechers conveniently catered for unisex footwear (including comfy slip on designs for casualwear), but soon branched out into athletic clothing including pants, jackets, hats, bags, etc. In May 1995, the brand got a major popularity boost by selling casual clothing for boys and men. And two years later, Skechers opened its first branches in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe.

Within 6 years of opening, Skechers had evolved into a clothing brand with over 2,200 accounts and more than 30 stores. Speaking of which, in 2001 the company entered the UK market and set up shop in London, Paris and Germany. And today, the Skechers brand continues to impress with its ever-growing selection of workout clothing and accessories.
