The history of H. Samuel

The story starts in 1821, with brothers Moses and Lewis Samuel beginning a clock-making and silversmith business in Liverpool. In 1862, Harriet Samuel takes over the business from Moses (her father-in-law). After renaming it H. Samuel, she moves it to Manchester Market Street where it becomes a mail order business.

In 1890, her son develops the retail business and opens the first three H. Samuel shops (first in Preston, then later in Rochdale and Lancashire), which evolves into a very successful mail order business over the next 28 years. Thanks to customers’ growing demand for watches, bracelets and other jewellery, the company moves to bigger headquarters in Birmingham in 1912. And despite losing some shops during the war, H. Samuel remains a loyal supplier of engagement rings, necklaces and more.

By 1970, the number of H. Samuel stores had jumped to 200 (and to 300 by 1993), cementing its status as the UK’s favourite watch- and jewellery retailer.

Today, the brand is still enjoying its winning streak by continuing its outstanding service, especially thanks to its online store and website, which launched in 2005.
