The history of Footasylum

Footasylum was founded in 2005 by two giants in the sports retailer world – David Makin and John Wardle, the original co-founders of JD Sports. Makin kicked off the process by starting with a footwear-only setting, yet when Wardle came on board, the company’s products expanded to include sportswear and street clothing.

Aimed at a slightly younger target market (16 – 25 years) than JD Sports, the first Footasylum opened in Chesire – and was a smash hit with the UK’s sports junkies. Soon, more outlets popped up across the UK. However, once it was discovered that this younger audience actually preferred shopping online, the brand’s reputation got boosted even more, especially since it could now hold so much more stock (including exclusive ranges and high-name brands).

In 2019, JD Sports purchased Footasylum, since both are committed to sports -related fashions and footwear. Today, Footasylum fans get to choose where they want to get their favourite sports clothing – either at one of the multiple stores across the UK, or the successful online store (which also offers additional perks).
