The history of Decathlon

It was 1976 when sports buff Michel Leclercq opened his first store in Lille, France, which focused on sporting goods. Met with overwhelming success, the Decathlon brand evolved beautifully – so much so that 10 years later, the brand launched its own production, designing and manufacturing team for its own products.

Soon, the company expanded overseas, including to the UK in 1999, Brazil (2001), China (2003), etc. But it was the launch of the online store decathlon.co.uk in 2011 which really boosted the brand, eventually leading to Decathlon’s first UK warehouse in Northampton in 2013. And in 2017, the 30th store was opened in the UK.

Today, Decathlon still continues its first-rate customer service and commitment to all things sports-related. And with the company’s first-rate research- and development facilities scattered across France (where it registers up to 40 patents annually), the future of Decathlon (and its stores) seems brighter than ever.
