This brand’s history is full of details.
Nike was initially a distributor for the Japanese shoemaker Onitsuka Tiger. It was created by track coach Bill Bowerman and athlete Phil Knight. The latter had planned to call the company Dimension 6 but the company’s first employee, Jeff Johnson, came up with Nike, drawing inspiration from the Greek goddess of victory of the same name.
Legend has it that Nike’s first shoes were made in a waffle iron after Bowerman had a eureka moment after seeing his wife make breakfast. He went on to make soles which were light yet had excellent grip, patenting the idea as the Nike Waffle Trainer.
Nike’s distinctive logo, known as the Swoosh, was created by design student Carolyn Davidson. She earned just $35 ($200 in today’s money), but the shares she received are now worth more than $640,000.
The company’s slogan, Just Do It, was inspired by serial killer Gary Gilmore’s final words before his execution, “Let's do it”.
Nike was founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports and changed its name to Nike in 1971. It is now present in 43 countries, with 679 factories and more than one million employees. The largest Nike store is located on Oxford Street in London.
