About ASDA
Aiding in the success of Asda was the launch of its new format in October 2003. Known as Asda Living, the new format was the companys first "general merchandise" store and focused on non-food ranges like clothing, toys, health- and beauty products, home electronics, etc.
The history of Asda
The Asda story starts in the 1920s, with the Asquith family (specifically two brothers, Peter and Fred) running various butcher shops in Knottingly, West Yorkshire. Simultaneously, a collection of West Riding dairy farmers, which included the Stockdale family, joined together as what would later become Associated Dairies and Farm Stores Ltd, with Arthur Stockdale as the managing director.
After a visit to the US to see how supermarkets operated across the pond, Peter and Fred Asquith returned to the UK. Inspired by their trip, the brothers converted an old theatre called the Queens into a self-service supermarket in Castleford in 1963 – the first in the UK. Soon afterward, a converted indoor market became the second Queens store. Some of the two biggest drawing cards of these stores were food discounting and late-night shopping on Fridays – which are still popular to this day.
During Britain’s booming economy in the mid-1960s, Peter Asquith was on the lookout for a company to take control of his in-store butchery. And that’s how he met up with Noel Stockdale at Associated Dairies. This was the start of a fruitful retail partnership that produced Asda on 3 May 1965 (ASquith + DAiries = ASDA).
