The history of Poundland

Thanks to a starting capital of just £50,000, Poundland was founded by Dave Dodd and Steven Smith back in 1990. After opening the first pilot store in Burton-upon-Trent, the Poundland brand was met with enthusiasm, resulting in more stores opening in High Street, Meadowhall, and other quality trading locations.

In 1996, a new Hong Kong office was opened to boost product sourcing and operations in the UK. And thanks to additional services (like online shopping, exclusive discounts on certain products like clothes, delivery services and more), the Poundland brand just grew more and more popular – so popular that Poundland opened its 150th shop in Northampton in mid-2006.

But it was with the launch of PEP&Co Home range products in all Poundland stores in 2017 that really sent the brand’s reputation through the roof. With items already flying off the shelves (from beauty products and monopoly boardgames to fashion-conscious clothes), Poundland’s commitment to gorgeous new home accessories cemented its positive reputation among UK shoppers.
