The history of Wickes

The Wickes brand really started in the US back in 1854 when Henry Dunn Wickes, along with his brother, opened a modest operation in Michigan’s lumber business. The popular one-stop-shop selling a range of construction products at lower prices (especially for DIY purposes) kicked off during the 1950s’ American property boom. This success reached across the pond and in 1972 the first UK Wickes branch was opened in Whitefield, Manchester. By 1987, the brand had expanded to 41 locations across the UK.

It might be half a century since the first UK Wickes opened its doors, but the company’s mission (“to be the strongest brand in the market while offering outstanding value for money”) has remained the same since day one.
