About The Works

For customer convenience, all The Works stores are categorised into five product zones:
1. Kids (which includes toys, games, etc.)
2. Arts and crafts

4. Family gifts
5. Seasonal / regional (consisting of local interest and tourist-specific ranges).

With The Works’ online platform launched in 2012, customers were finally able to place online orders for anything from books to home decorations safely and conveniently.

The history of The Works

Husband and wife team Mike and Jenny Crossley founded the company back in 1981 as a store selling discount books (named Remainders Limited). Met with success, the business evolved over the next 16 years into more than 160 stores across the UK and Ireland.

Boosting its business considerably, the Crossleys acquired 19 stores from First Stop Stationery retailer in 2001, all of which were rebranded as The Works. Two years later, the couple sold their venture to a management buyout for around £25m, by which time the company had exploded into 176 stores with 1,500 staff members.

The Works was acquired by Endless LLP in 2008, perfectly setting the foundation for the company’s future growth. And with the launch of its e-commerce platform in January 2012, The Works welcomed its growing customer base to the wonderful world of online orders and -shopping.

The next year, The Works’ loyalty programme Together was launched, which reached one million members in just three years. Today, The Works continues to impress with its growing range of books, stationery, and arts- and crafts products, first-rate customer service, and continued mission to offer “customers a unique and enjoyable shopping experience”.
