The history of Smyths Toys

The Smyths Toys story starts in 1986. Birdie and Paddy Smyth ran a pub and newsagents in Ireland, which also sold toys. Of the couple’s 6 children, 4 of the brothers (Tony, Padraig, Liam and Tommy) are in charge of the company, which was founded on 23 December 1986 in Claremorris, County Mayo.

With a rich range of toys suited for girls and boys, babies and teens, Smyths Toys had a winning recipe for retail success. Pretty soon, branches were opening left and right in Ireland, but also later in England.

Cut to 2006, when Smyths Toys (still operating smoothly) updated its logo into a 3D design for a more modern look.

In 2018, the brand (which was pretty constricted to the UK up to this point) started expanding to central Europe. This happened after Smyths bought over numerous Toys “R” Us stores in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, which were all rebranded as Smyths Toy stores.

Today, Smyths Toys (which is still headquartered in Galway, Ireland) continues to impress, not only with its rich range of indoor- and outdoor toys and games, but also thanks to its commitment to customer satisfaction like discount codes, in-store events, and more.
