The history of Superdrug

It was the Goldstein brothers who first incorporated Superdrug under its name Leading Supermarkets Limited. This was in London 1964, and fortunately both brothers had experience in the retail industry. Two years later, their first shop (named Superdrug) opened in Putney.

Met with overwhelming success, Superdrug expanded quickly, and by the early 1970s there were already 40 stores in the UK (which climbed to 300 by 1981).

In 1987, the brand was sold to Woolworth Holdings (known as Kingfisher plc today), yet that didn’t deter Superdrug from growing. In fact, with more stores opening (and including an in-house pharmacy for many of them), the brand’s profitability and market share also climbed.

In 2006, by which time the brand had already introduced online shopping, Superdrug decided to open in the Republic of Ireland.

And in February 2010, the brand proudly became another BUAV-approved retailer, showing how committed Superdrug is to keep all its own-brand products free from animal testing.
