About Argos

Forming part of the Sainsbury’s Group, Argos is a trendy choice for customers looking to live well for less in numerous exciting ways, including customer perks, delivery/collection services, and more.
Don’t forget to catch up with the latest Argos catalogues and updated store opening times, as well as sales and discounts through their online website.
The history of Argos
While holidaying in the Greek city of Argos in 1973, Richard Tompkins was hit with a thought: what if people could buy goods from his "Green Shield Gift House” with money instead of savings stamps? After rebranding his original Green Shield Stamps catalogue shops as Argos (named for the city), the first Argos store opened in July 1973. Not only did Argos introduce catalogue retail to the UK, but it was also met with overwhelming positive reception. So much so that, by 1980, Argos boasted 91 stores and a £112million turnover. It was also during this time that the brand started its Elizabeth Duke jewellery counter, which turned Argos into the UK’s 4th biggest jewellery retailer a mere 2 years later.
Argos’ commitment to customer convenience got a huge boost in 1995 with the launch of its website (alongside other big-name retailers like Amazon and eBay).
In 2016, Argos was acquired by Sainsbury’s supermarket chain.
