About John Lewis
Setting John Lewis apart from competitors is its life-long commitment to its customers known as ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ (NKU). Underselling refers to a retailer selling the same goods as another at a lower price. Thus, NKU has been a promise for over 75 years that John Lewis will never sell the same products (whether furniture, shoes or anything else) offered by another retailer at a higher price or worse value for money.
The history of John Lewis
In 1864, John Lewis opened a small draper’s shop on Oxford Street in London. In 1905, a second store (Peter Jones in Sloane Square) was added, boosting product offerings and customer convenience. As the business grew, John Lewis eventually handed over the reins to his son, John Spedan Lewis.
And it was this very same John Spedan Lewis who, in 1919 and 1920, started the John Lewis Partnership, a privately-held public limited company that’s controlled by a trust on behalf of John Lewis employees (called ‘partners’).
Throughout the next 20 years, the partnership evolved to double its original size with the acquisition of 15 branches of the Selfridge Provincial Stores Group.
Finally, in 2001, John Lewis launched its website, kick-starting an entire new generation of online shoppers getting their shopping fixes from online product brochures showcasing furniture, kids’ clothing, etc.
In 2018, a major rebranding resulted in the company becoming John Lewis & Partners.
In 2021, John Lewis became the first retailer in the entire UK to introduce six months’ equal parenthood paid leave, as well as two weeks’ paid pregnancy loss leave – a clear indication of how much employees (who are called ‘partners’) means to the John Lewis brand.
