Facebook & EE have partnered to provide mobile phone coverage to some of the most remote areas in Scotland.

Director of Radio Networks at EE, Mansoor Hanif, has said “The Scottish islands and Welsh valleys are the most challenging areas topographically in Britain for mobile networks”.

Rural villages have been a long term problem for networks, but by partnering with Facebook, EE say they will be able to offer 98% connectivity across the UK by the end of 2016 - with rural areas being top priority.

EE is also working with the Home Office to launch 4G balloons in order to provide 4G connectivity to areas of northern England, such as Yorkshire, during weather emergencies. Power goes down regularly in storms and floods and EE aim to keep people connected with these balloons.

EE is a British mobile service provider, formed in 2010 following a merge between the Orange and T-Mobile brands. With around 28 million customers, it is the largest operator of 4G services in Europe.

EE 4G coverage reaches over 80% off the UK population, with their 3G services reaching 98%.
