About Currys PC World
Enhancing the reputation of Currys PC World is the company’s commitment to assist clients in any way possible, including its online Buying Guide. Here is where a clear distinction between kitchen appliances and computing products, for example, are made crystal-clear, allowing you to conveniently browse and shop online.
Speaking of shopping, make sure to explore Tesco’s latest online catalogues and sales brochures to see what discounts and product promotions you can take advantage of.
The history of Currys PC World
Henry Curry started making and selling bicycles (and related items) back in Leicester in 1884, and opened his first shop in 1888. In 1927, Currys was incorporated as a business, and by then the brand had opened 134 shops across the UK. After acquiring the Campion Cycle Company Limited and expanding its business to include the manufacturing and selling of gramophones and other electrical goods, Currys started focusing more on the electrical side of the business. By the 1940s, Currys had stopped manufacturing bicycles, but would continue selling them until the 1960s.
It was during 1967 and 1984, under the directorship of Henry’s grandson Dennis Curry, that the company expanded greatly to include televisions and domestic appliances in its product range.
Although another electrical product retail chain, Dixons, took over Currys in 1984, it allowed the brand to continue as a separate identity. In 2008, Dixons combined Currys and PC World by physically merging numerous shop formats into one.
Major reshufflings in 2020 and 2021 led to Dixons rebranding all of its retail businesses as Currys, while Currys PC World (along with Team Knowhow and Dixons Carphone brands) retired in the UK and Ireland. The brand name also changed to Currys plc.
